The E. Amaldi Foundation is organising the 2nd EUDIS Hackathon ‘Empowering Innovation for European Defence’ to be held in Rome from 9 to 11 May 2025.

The hackathon, funded by the European Union and part of the EU Defence Innovation Scheme (EUDIS), offers a unique platform to present ideas on a large scale. The competition will take place simultaneously in 8 different European locations: Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Spain, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland. In Italy, the event is organised by the E. Amaldi Foundation in collaboration with numerous stakeholders in the national innovation ecosystem.

The aim of the hackathon is to bring together students, young talents, professionals, programmers, entrepreneurs and researchers who are eager to address the challenges of security and defence for the protection of individuals and communities in conflict zones. Participation in the hackathon will allow participants to work in a stimulating environment and collaborate on the creation of innovative solutions. Participants will be organised into teams and will have the opportunity to choose between three key challenges:

  1. Advanced situational awareness and tactical surveillance systems
  2. Low-cost protective equipment for frontline defence
  3. Advanced medical support for frontline assistance

In April, the Foundation will hold an informative webinar to better prepare those who intend to participate in the EUDIS Defence Hackathon 2025. This event will provide participants with all the necessary information and useful tools to better face the proposed challenges.

The ‘EUDIS Award’ will see the winning teams from each national venue participate in a 2-month EUDIS mentoring programme with international experts, culminating in an EU-level pitch final, where the top 3 teams will have the opportunity to present their solutions at a major technology or defence event (with travel expenses, accommodation and tickets covered). At a local level, the E. Amaldi Foundation offers additional awards: €5,000 in cash prizes (€2,500 to the winning team, €1,500 to the second and €1,000 to the third), the ANTHEA think tank, a partner of the initiative, will offer 4 hours of personalised mentoring on innovation finance to the top 3 teams.
