Fondazione E. Amaldi will organise the 8th Cassini Hackathon “EU Space for Security & Defence” which will take place in Rome from November 22 to 24, 2024.

This competition, launched by the European Commission, aims to stimulate the use of space technologies and will be held simultaneously in 10 different locations across Europe, including, together with Italy: Belgium, Moldova, the Netherlands, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovenia, Spain, Ukraine, and Hungary.

In Italy, the event is organized by the E. Amaldi Foundation in collaboration with numerous stakeholders from the national innovation ecosystem, including the Ministry of Defence, the Hypatia Research Consortium, and University of Rome La Sapienza, University of Rome Tor Vergata, and LUISS University.

The main goal is to bring together students, young talents, professionals, programmers, entrepreneurs, economists, and researchers, all united by the desire to tackle security and defence challenges. Participating in the Hackathon will allow participants to work in an inspiring environment, collaborating to create innovative solutions.

Participants will organize into teams and will have the opportunity to choose from various challenges, including:

  • Enhancing defence and security with geospatial intelligence

  • Unmanned drone applications for defence and security operations

  • Orbital security: navigating the collision frontier

The weekend of the Hackathon will be preceded by a week of exploratory and training sessions, which will take place online from November 4 to 8, 2024, during the “Big Ideas Campaign.” These online sessions will complement the meetings of the Central Hub of EUSPA, providing useful insights to all participants across the ten European locations.

The Hackathon represents a unique opportunity to develop innovative ideas, learn from industry leaders, and build a network of connections with like-minded individuals. The prizes include €3,500 in cash, allocated as follows: €2,000 for the first place, €1,000 for the second, and €500 for the third one.

Moreover, the winning local team will participate in the Demo Day on November 27, 2024, competing at the European level for additional cash prizes and mentoring opportunities.
